Wikidata Platform Backend Migration Specialist

We are seeking a skilled Backend Migration Specialist to support a critical platform migration for a globally used structured data system. In this role, you will help ensure a smooth transition from a legacy backend to a modern, standards-compliant system. You will work closely with technical teams and user communities to analyze, rewrite, and document queries, minimizing disruption and maintaining high data integrity. This is a remote-first position requiring coordination across time zones, offering a mix of independent problem-solving and collaborative support. The role combines technical expertise with clear communication, providing a unique opportunity to impact a widely used data platform.

Accountabilities:

  • Analyze existing queries to identify dependencies on legacy backend features and non-standard behavior.
  • Support query rewrites and migration efforts to ensure compatibility with the new system.
  • Document canonical patterns, provide guidance to users, and maintain clear, accurate technical documentation.
  • Assist developers, researchers, and community members during the migration process through direct support, office hours, and written guidance.
  • Collaborate with engineering and platform teams to identify recurring issues and propose improvements.
  • Contribute to best practices for writing performant, standards-compliant SPARQL 1.1 queries.

Benefits:

  • Competitive, equitable compensation based on skills, experience, and location.
  • Flexible, fully remote work environment with collaboration across international time zones.
  • Opportunities to directly impact a globally significant open knowledge platform.
  • Exposure to a collaborative, international, and community-driven team culture.
  • Access to learning opportunities and technical growth within a structured data ecosystem.

Requirements:

  • Hands-on experience with SPARQL 1.1 and working with large or complex RDF datasets.
  • Background in data platform migrations or deprecating legacy APIs.
  • Ability to understand, refactor, and optimize real-world queries authored by others.
  • Comfort working with incomplete information and evolving technical requirements.
  • Strong written communication skills for both technical documentation and community support.
  • Ability to work independently while coordinating with multiple stakeholders across time zones.
  • Nice-to-have: familiarity with structured data platforms, experience supporting developer/researcher communities, or designing lightweight analysis tools for query patterns.
