Role Overview

As an Engineering Manager at Ashby, you will help build a different type of engineering team and culture. We are looking for leaders who think deeply about individual performance, process, and culture, rather than just running sprint planning or driving product and technical decisions. You will focus on building your team, developing their skills to thrive with ownership, and creating an environment that empowers them to do their best work with minimal distraction.

Responsibilities

  • Team Leadership: Manage a growing team of engineers in Europe (typically up to 6 direct reports for junior EMs) to allow for time observing, correcting, praising, and coding.
  • Hands-on Engineering: Stay hands-on with the code without being on the critical path. This includes debugging customer issues, shipping small bug fixes, or improving developer experience.
  • Coaching & Mentorship: Provide feedback on product and technical specs to help engineers identify where to cut scope or improve quality. Grow engineers to take on large, loosely defined projects with little intervention.
  • Process Improvement: Spot patterns within the team, figure out better ways to operate, and build automation to power those improvements.
  • Company Culture: Contribute to an environment that is optimistic about what engineers can own and achieve, moving away from pessimistic processes that box people into smaller roles.

What We Are Building

Ashby is a Talent Acquisition (TA) software platform designed to provide the highest standard of tooling for recruiting teams. We are moving beyond basic scheduling to build intelligent, powerful software that automates complex tasks. We are also expanding into HR areas like onboarding and performance management.

Benefits & Perks

  • Compensation: Competitive salary (€110K – €185K), equity, and bonuses.
  • Stock Options: 10-year exercise window for stock options.
  • Time Off: Unlimited PTO, with active encouragement to use it.
  • Parental Leave: A minimum of 12 weeks of fully paid parental leave.
  • Health: High-quality supplemental health insurance for you and your dependents, 100% covered by Ashby.
  • Budgets: Generous budgets for equipment, software, office furniture, education ($100/month), and tools ($250/month).
  • Work Environment: Remote-first culture with a focus on low-meeting, high-ownership, and flexible hours. We meet in person at least twice a year as a department and company, with additional budget for local meetups.

Requirements

  • Technical Depth: You love being technical and can hold in-depth conversations with direct reports across infra, backend, and frontend. You enjoy keeping your skills up-to-date.
  • Management Passion: You enjoy management problems, including driving people to be their best, giving difficult feedback, and building systems to facilitate this.
  • High Standards: You hold your team to a high standard and are comfortable getting into the details to provide feedback.
  • Communication: You are an excellent and empathetic communicator capable of facilitating change and navigating diverse opinions.
  • Leadership Insight: You understand what exceptional engineers look like, how to recruit them, and how to grow them.
  • Strategic Mindset: You are good at thinking about product and business but prefer building a team that can make the best decisions autonomously.
  • Cultural Fit: You thrive in high-trust, high-autonomy environments and are optimistic about building a team that functions differently than the status quo.
  • Tech Stack: While previous experience in our stack is not required, a love for typed languages is helpful. Our stack includes: TypeScript (frontend & backend), React, GraphQL API, Node.js, Postgres, and Redis.
