About hyperexponential (hx)

At hyperexponential, we're building the AI-powered platform that enables the world's most critical decisions in a $7 trillion industry - which risks to take, and how to price them. These are the decisions that shape real-world outcomes: whether rockets successfully launch into space, autonomous vehicles make it to market, or communities recover after major storms.

Until now, insurance has been making billion-dollar decisions using outdated tools. We're changing that. Our platform brings together data, AI, and human expertise to give insurers the fastest path from submission to decision - helping them move faster, act smarter, and take on more risk with confidence.

Backed by a16z, Highland Europe, and Battery Ventures, we're scaling globally - already trusted by nearly 50 of the world's largest insurers, with zero churn and billions in premiums flowing through hx.

What makes hx different is the people who build it. Here, impact isn't tied to title or tenure; it's defined by the challenges you take on and the discipline you bring. Surrounded by peers who stretch you, you'll do the best, hardest work of your life in a company engineered to endure.

About the Engineering team

At hyperexponential, engineering is at the heart of our mission to transform the insurance industry. Our engineers build and scale hx Renew, the SaaS platform that enables insurers to model complex risks and make smarter pricing decisions at speed. By combining deep technical expertise with creativity, the team pushes the boundaries of what’s possible in insurance technology.

Within engineering, our product teams are cross-functional, pairing frontend and backend engineers with designers and product managers. This enables end-to-end ownership of features, with engineers contributing across design, architecture, implementation, and testing. Collaboration is a core part of how we work, ensuring that every release is both technically sound and valuable to our users.

About the role

Underwriters at the world's largest insurers still do much of their work in spreadsheets, email threads, and systems that were never designed for the decisions they are making. We are rebuilding that from the ground up.

You will join the Workflow Underwriting stream, building the next generation of our underwriting platform. This is not a platform with AI features bolted on. We are designing it around the agents we build, which means the architecture, the domain model, and the interaction patterns are all genuinely open questions. You will help answer them.

You will contribute at code, architecture, and domain level from your first weeks, and you will talk directly to the underwriters who use what you build.

What you will do

  • Design, build, and operate backend services in Kotlin or Java, and own them in production.
  • Turn ambiguous underwriting problems into simple, reliable software. Much of the work is deciding what to build, not just building it.
  • Shape architectural decisions: APIs, domain models, persistence, reliability, observability, and how the platform evolves without collapsing under its own weight.
  • Build real depth in the underwriting domain, to the point where you can challenge a requirement rather than only implement it.
  • Design and build agent-assisted workflows, and make judgement calls about where an agent should act, where it should advise, and where a human must stay in control.
  • Use AI coding tools, including Claude, as a core part of how you work. You delegate substantial work to them and you remain accountable for the quality, security, and correctness of everything you ship.
  • Work across boundaries with frontend engineers, product partners, and client-facing teams, and step outside your specialism when the problem demands it.
  • Give and take direct feedback, and raise the engineering bar around you.

What we are looking for

  • Strong professional experience building and running backend systems in Kotlin, Java, or another JVM language.
  • Judgement in architecture and system design: a feel for what to build now, what to defer, and what will hurt in two years.
  • Evidence of shipping software that solved a real customer or business problem, ideally something you owned end to end.
  • A self-starting approach. You find the highest-value problem rather than waiting for a ticket.
  • Clear communication. You can hold the same conversation with an underwriter, an executive, and an engineer, and adjust for each.
  • Genuine appetite for problems with no known answer, and comfort working without a precedent to copy.
  • Confident, responsible use of AI coding tools, with a critical eye on their output.
  • Receptiveness to feedback. We give it directly and often, and we expect you to give it back.

Helpful, not required

  • Experience in insurance, underwriting, or another complex regulated domain. We will teach you the domain. We cannot teach curiosity about it.
  • Experience across both backend and frontend.
  • Experience building workflow, decision-support, or agent-assisted products.
  • Experience working directly with enterprise clients.
