The Role

Docplanner is looking for a Staff Engineer to set the technical direction for the Marketplace, the patient-facing platform for searching, comparing, and booking doctors. The Marketplace is undergoing a major architectural shift, moving from a legacy PHP monolith to a company monorepo using vertical slices and the strangler pattern.

Your responsibilities include:

• Own the Technical Direction of the Marketplace: Accountable for the target architecture across search, listings, profiles, and booking flows. You will guide the migration from the monolith to the monorepo, ensuring data, business logic, and persistence are moved natively. You will transform Marketplace capabilities into reusable building blocks with clear, versioned contracts for the rest of the Docplanner portfolio.
• Lead Through AI-Native Engineering: Ship production changes by directing AI coding agents, prototyping risky migrations, and driving AI-assisted development for legacy code analysis, contract generation, and testing.
• Multiply the Teams Around You: Partner with Engineering and Product Managers, mentor senior engineers on system design, and contribute to the Staff+ community of practice to maintain consistent technical standards.

What we're looking for

• You have led the technical direction across several teams, with decisions that held up in production.
• Proven experience taking a large legacy system apart while it kept serving real traffic (strangler pattern, anti-corruption layers, data migration, dual-write pitfalls).
• Strong background in distributed systems and backend architecture in a polyglot environment.
• Solid hands-on experience using AI to accelerate software development, with good judgment on when to rely on it.
• Ability to direct AI agents for code generation while maintaining design, correctness, and security.
• Experience mentoring and raising the bar for engineers.
• Fluent English.

Bonus Points

• Experience with two-sided marketplaces, search and discovery, or booking and scheduling systems.
• Experience with monorepos at scale (build tooling, code ownership, shared platform conventions).
• Experience exposing product capabilities to AI agents.
• Experience in healthcare or other regulated domains where data privacy and security shape the architecture.
