Role Overview

As an Engineering Manager at Ashby, you will help build a different type of engineering team and culture. We are looking for a leader who is optimistic about what engineers can own and achieve. You will focus on building your team, their skills, and an environment that empowers them to do their best work with little distraction. You will manage a growing team of engineers in Europe, typically keeping direct reports around 6 to allow for observation, coaching, and hands-on technical involvement.

Responsibilities

  • Team Leadership: Build and grow your team, focusing on individual performance and fostering an environment of ownership.
  • Technical Involvement: Stay hands-on by debugging customer issues, shipping small bug fixes, or improving developer experience. You will keep your skills up-to-date while ensuring you are not on the critical path.
  • Coaching: Provide feedback on product and technical specs to help engineers identify where to cut scope or improve quality. You will influence and coach individual contributors to reach the right decisions.
  • Process Improvement: Spot patterns within your team, figure out better ways to operate, and build the automation that powers those improvements.
  • Strategic Contribution: Work on projects that impact the business, such as improving data generation in demo accounts or developing tools that help the team thrive.

Company Culture

Ashby is building a high-trust, high-autonomy environment. We believe in minimal process, allowing engineers to take ownership of problems from research to implementation. We value deliberate communication, keeping meetings to a minimum to protect focus time. We are committed to building a diverse team and maintaining a sustainable, marathon-paced work environment.

What We Offer

  • Compensation: Competitive salary (€150K – €250K), equity, and bonus opportunities.
  • Stock Options: 10-year exercise window for stock options.
  • Time Off: Unlimited PTO, with active encouragement to take it.
  • Parental Leave: A minimum of 12 weeks of fully paid parental leave (or longer if required by regional laws).
  • Health: High-quality supplemental health insurance for you and your dependents, 100% covered by Ashby.
  • Budgets:
    • Generous equipment, software, and office furniture budget.
    • $100/month education budget (with additional coverage for conferences).
    • $250/month tool budget plus access to AI tools like Claude, Cursor, and Codex.
  • Flexibility: Remote-first culture with flexible hours and in-person meetups at least twice a year.

Requirements

  • Technical Depth: You love being technical and can hold in-depth conversations with direct reports across infrastructure, backend, and frontend.
  • Management Passion: You enjoy solving management problems, giving difficult feedback, and building systems that make team operations easier.
  • High Standards: You hold your team to a high standard and are comfortable getting into the details.
  • Communication: You are an excellent and empathetic communicator capable of navigating different beliefs and opinions.
  • Leadership Experience: You understand what exceptional engineers look like and have deep experience in recruiting and growing them.
