About the Role

You are a Player/Coach. You will lead a cross-functional squad (Data Engineers, Analytics Engineers, Analysts) dedicated to a specific business domain (e.g., Marketing, Transactions, or Merchant). Your goal is to treat "Data as a Product"—moving away from reactive ticket-taking to proactive, governed, and automated insights. You are technically fluent enough to review code, but business-savvy enough to push back on low-value requests.

Key Responsibilities

  • Squad Leadership: Manage the backlog, capacity, and development of ~5 data professionals. Translate vague business problems into technical specs.
  • Data Product Ownership: Own the end-to-end lifecycle of your domain’s data—from ingestion design (reviewing Engineering plans) to final visualization (Tableau).
  • Stakeholder Management: Act as the single point of truth for your domain. Negotiate priorities with Business Leaders to ensure the team works on high-ROI tasks.
  • Modernization: Be part of data platform unification project to decommission legacy systems running on Teradata and Hive and go fully to GCP native.
  • Quality & Governance: Enforce best practices on data governance and documentation, ensure metric consistency. If the data breaks, you lead the fix.

Groupon is a marketplace where customers discover new experiences and services everyday and local businesses thrive. To date we have worked with over a million merchant partners worldwide, connecting over 16 million customers with deals across various categories. In a world often dominated by e-commerce giants, we stand out as one of the few platforms uniquely committed to helping local businesses succeed on a performance basis.

Groupon is on a radical journey to transform our business with relentless pursuit of results. Even with thousands of employees spread across multiple continents, we still maintain a culture that inspires innovation, rewards risk-taking and celebrates success. The impact here can be immediate due to our scale and the speed of our transformation. We're a "best of both worlds" kind of company. We're big enough to have the resources and scale, but small enough that a single person has a surprising amount of autonomy and can make a meaningful impact.

What Success Looks Like

  • Stakeholder Trust: Business leaders stop keeping "shadow spreadsheets" because they trust your data and dashboard numbers.
  • Velocity: You reduce "Time to Insight" by 30% by automating repetitive ad-hoc queries using AI or standard views.
  • Team Health: Your squad has clear priorities, minimal context switching, and understands why their work matters.

We’re looking for builders who thrive in structure, not chaos—leaders who bring clarity to complex data and help the business make confident decisions. People who value clean, scalable solutions over clever hacks, reliable automated systems over manual fire-drills, and consistent metrics over conflicting reports.

  • Business Acumen: You can explain "Revenue Recognition" or "Conversion Funnels" to an engineer, and "ETL Latency" to a Sales Director.
